Ex Hirsch 300, 2014, lot no. 162. On the present medallion, the rather peaceful emperor is stylized as a successful warrior, wreathed by the goddess of victory in triumph. In 235 AD he was slain by revolting soldiers near Mainz; his successor, Maximinus Thrax, was typically a veteran officer.
